Koh Samui tsunami?

Has Koh Samui ever had a tsunami?

No. There has never been a tsunami in Koh Samui.

The Tsunami of 2004 devastated the coastal areas of many countries, Thailand being one of those that suffered unimaginable tragedy involving both Thai and foreigners alike.

Because of its position on the east coast and within the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui was not directly affected by that awful tragedy.

In fact Koh Samui (and the other islands that lie off the east coast of Thailand) have never been in danger of a tsunami, as the peninsula of Southern Thailand and Malaysia present effective barriers.

Due to the positions of the main earth fault line – lying in-between the Bay of Bengal and the west coast of Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia – Koh Samui and its compatriot islands in the Gulf of Thailand are actually among the safest of places to be as regards earthquake resultant tsunami.
